چکیده

Compressed representations of programs can be used to improve the code density in embedded systems. Several hardware decompression architectures have been proposed recently. In this paper, we present a method of decompressing programs using software. It relies on using a softwaremanaged instruction cache under control of the decompressor. This is achieved by employing a simple cache management instruction that allows explicit writing into a cache line. We also consider selective compression (determining which procedures in a program should be compressed) and show that selection based on cache miss profiles can substantially outperform the usual execution time based profiles for some benchmarks.

Optimizing Code Size for Embedded Real-Time Applications

This paper presents an efficient technique for code compression. In our work, a sequence of instructions that occurs repeatedly in an application will be compressed to reduce its code size. During compression, each instruction is first divided into the operation part and the register part, and then only the operation part is compressed. For reducing the run-time overhead, we propose an instruct...

Impact of Code Compression on Estimated Worst-Case Execution Times

Code compression techniques might be useful to meet code size constraints in embedded systems. In the average case, the impact of code compression on the performance is double-edged: on one side, the number of accesses to memory hierarchy is reduced because several instructions are coded in a single word, and this is likely to reduce the execution time; on the other side, the decompression pena...

Efficient Execution of Compressed Programs

EFFICIENT EXECUTION OF COMPRESSED PROGRAMS by Charles Robert Lefurgy Chair: Trevor Mudge Code compression is the technique of using data compression to reduce the program memory size for memory-limited, embedded computers. For system-on-a-chip designs, this reduces the system die area which lowers die cost. After compilation, the binary (native code) program is compressed and stored in the embe...

An Approach for Code Compression in Run Time for Embedded Systems - A Preliminary Results

Several factors are considered in the development of embedded systems, among which may be mentioned: physical size, weight, mobility, power consumption, memory, safety, all combined with a low cost and ease of use. There are several techniques to optimize the execution time and power consumption in embedded systems. One such technique is the code compression, the majority of existing proposals ...

How Effective are Compression Codes for Reducing Test Data Volume?

Run-length codes and their variants have recently been shown to be very effective for compressing system-on-achip (SOC) test data. In this paper, we analyze the Golomb code, the conventional run-length code and the FDR code for a binary memoryless data source, and compare the compression obtained in each case to fundamental entropy bounds. We show analytically that the FDR code outperforms both...
